Positive Feedback - Keeping Football Fed

At first, Northwest Classen High School football coach Edward King blamed his players' low energy levels on the heat.

Once the temperatures cooled, King realized “they were just as sluggish.”

“They would say, ‘Hey, coach, I didn't eat lunch today,'” he recalled. “If they go without eating lunch, then you're looking at the possibility of them going a whole night without a meal. A lot of our kids live in poverty, so I'm not sure they're getting a meal at home.”

That's when King started spending his own money to buy chicken to serve his players before games.  Eventually, a nearby church started providing hearty pregame meals.

Now, Northwest Classen parent Paula Lewis is seeing to it that football players also eat together the night before games.

Lewis, an Oklahoma City School Board member, spearheaded a community effort that raised $4,500 in less than a week to feed members of both the varsity and junior varsity football teams.
